MARGARET ALMOND 1878-1945 3rd wife of JAMES MARTLAND AINSCOUGH 1854 - 1937.

I’m doing my family tree and an ancestor of mine MARGARET ALMOND 1878-1945 was the 3rd wife of JAMES MARTLAND AINSCOUGH 1854 - 1937.  

Margaret was the daughter of James Birkett Almond my 1st Cousin 5 x removed who owned The Almond Brewery company.   I viewed an old article that said James Martland Ainscough is the father of SIR THOMAS MARTLAND AINSCOUGH which is correct.  

The mother of Sir Thomas was MARY HALTON 1862-1888 she was James’s first wife. They married 6th October 1885.   Jame’s second wife was JANE LANCASTER 1862-1907. They married 4th August 1894. Jame’s 3rd wife was as mentioned earlier MARGARET ALMOND 1908.   I have a photo of them at STANDISH HALL, Standish Wigan.

St.Olav's Wirral Viking Pilgrimage 2012

Dear all,
Can I bring to your attention details of this year’s St.Olav's Day Wirral Viking Heritage walk/Pilgrimage:
This year’s walk (the 5th annual walk) goes from the site of the old Viking church at St. Bridget's in West Kirby (where there is the famous Viking hogback tombstone and also a dedication to St. Olav) to another church with strong Viking roots - St. Mary and St. Helen in Neston, where there are the fragments of at least 3 Viking crosses, one of which has been magnificently rebuilt into a painted replica featuring a Viking lady with her arm touchingly around the waste of her husband. We meet outside St. Bridget’s Church at 11.30. After a demonstration of the St. Bridget's Viking stone (and the dedication to St. Olav) around 11.40 (please do not go into the Church before this unless you are attending the morning service at 10am) and a blessing by Rev John Bleazard the walk proceeds along the Wirral Way & along our beautiful coastline, stopping for a break at the Thurstaston Visitor Centre, through Heswall and onto Neston, finishing with a cup of tea (& possibly like last year with scouse/lapskaus) and a demonstration of the Viking stonework - and the replica inside the Church.
Last years walk (which went from Neston to Chester) was recently broadcast as part of BBC2’s The Great British Story with Michael Wood – you can still see this here:

As in previous years, the July 29th 2012 walk will require a reasonable level of fitness to complete the full distance of 8 miles or 12km.  As before it will also be possible to join in for only part of the walk (e.g. joining or leaving us at the Thurstaston Visitor Centre, where we will be having a break). In common with the main St. Olav’s Pilgrimage in Norway, although we provide a guide, you come at your own risk and are responsible for yourselves.  You would also responsible for making your own transport arrangements from Neston at the end of the walk.  It may be possible for groups to share a taxi back to West Kirby.

One of the 12 strands of the Primary Literacy Framework is to 'Engage with and respond to text'. Diigo is a tool that can enable this.
Suggestion taken from Tom Barretts blog......
All you need is a story, add a table with children's names & photographs - if focussing on looking at opening hooks just a few paragraphs are needed. Above the table of children’s names add some simple instructions such as:
Take your time to read the opening to the story below. Your job is to respond in two ways.
1 - Add a sticky note, using the Diigo toolbar, under your picture or name and explain how you feel about this opening.
2 - Highlight some text and comment on part of the opening you enjoyed or want to talk about. Add you initials to your comments.
The idea is that children click on Sticky Notes in the Diigo toolbar and add a typed comment, then go a step further and (after clicking refresh in IE to see their friends comments - a good tip!) add further comments to their friends Diigo stickies. They can roll over the sticky bubble icon and then roll over the Actions menu at the top right. Then its just a case of going to “Add Comment” and the children are engaging with not only the text but each others’ responses.

Flickr badge may be gimmicky but I like it....it adds an extra something to a blog and once again very easy to use.
step 1 - choose the type of badge you want - html or flash

step 4 - get the code to copy and paste into your blog

Visual Hub

Thanks to David Baugh I have just successfully managed to create my first videoblog and it was so simple I will definitely do it again...
I used Visual Hub to convert a full quality Quicktime DV file into the H.264 Codec for itunes - Im pleased to say I now have a full license for VisualHub and I cant imagine how Ive managed without it! I would definitely recommend it, its simplicity.... so intuitive I didnt need to read the instruction file. Upoad to YouTube and copy the code ready to paste into my blog- for an example see 14-19 ipod blog

Animation montage - FIRE!

Huckleberry for MacBook and MacBook Pro

Now this looks like a very interesting alternative to DV camera......designed to sit on top of your screen, just like an isight camera (when you could buy them!).

Flickr & Skype- two old favourites

Just realised that Ive not mentioned a couple of my old favourites yet......

Flickr
Flickr is an excellent, free, web based photo sharing space......Im a bit of an addict now, its great fun, build up your contacts, add comments on each others photos and create sets. I'm finding it a really useful tool for pulling together all the family history info. including census detail.

Skype
The other one has to be Skype..... software that lets you make free calls and instant messaging to anyone else on Skype, anywhere in the world. Even though the calls are free, they are of excellent quality. You can also use webcams and make free video calls.

It has an exciting story creator program which could provide a good introduction to storyboarding. Available on the E2Bn - RBC website, free of charge and web based so can be used on any platform. In story creator 2 you can also add sound or record a voice over to go with your text. in both versions you can add your own photographs. Once you have created your story you can save this and play it back on the site (a bit like a movie) or download it to your computer. For those of you trying to develop ENGLISH or the creative curriculum with an ICT application this is ideal; you also have the opportunity to submit any of your own local myths and legends.

I was introduced to Bubblr the other week…………

Its a very simple comic strip program and free too! It works seamlessly with images in Flickr.
If you have an account with Flickr you can search for your photos using your username, or you can search for a theme and find any users images tagged with this eg. Deer.
The only drawback is you cannot save the file or print it. It can be published but be aware that all and sundry can view your strip!

I've just discovered Gliffy.

It's a simple online drawing program and still free at the moment while in its Beta stage of development.....check it out, its a collaborative tool if you want it to be or you can export as a png or jpg.

quikmaps????

Thought I’d try out quikmaps today, but not had much luck. I can see the potential but getting frustrated. Maybe some of you clever people on Tuesday can work it out for me…..not sure if its an incompatibility problem with my browser, using Safari, should try it with Firefox, but not tonight! It’s too much like hard work for a Saturday night. The plan was to create a map for a family history trail over in Lancs. next week. Places to go, evidence trail, churches, cemeteries, pubs, farms and streets, draw lines showing the best routes to them, then add comments and pictures afterwards and share it on a blog.
However, the ‘go to’ won’t let me go anywhere….just displays Philadelphia, USA. I had to drag the quikmap east until I found the places I was looking for. Then I tried using the line mode but couldn’t draw anything. Managed a scribble and couldn’t delete it. So I clicked “help” to see what I was doing wrong…..fatal mistake!! After reading the help I clicked the back button but my work (minutes of!) had disappeared and not to be found again. Tried saving several times or sending to my blog but this doesn’t work for me either.
